Seeing the new year in

I have been known to sleep through new year celebrations but not this year!!! There was so much happening and much to discover. The night did not disappoint.

We were all prepped and primed. Fingernails done, new clothes bought, managed to skip the hair dresser's (just), even the house got a facelift (courtesy of Milka) and 'the yellow undies' bought.

Giving someone yellow undies is wishing them luck and happiness in the new year. And of course we have to model them. Great start to the evening. Lots of laughter.

Then on to a party at Mark and Cecy's place.

Great night. Lots of all the right ingredients - music, dancing, food, drinks, friends (including some English speakers - Yeah) and a fabulous atmosphere. Thanks Cecy and Mark.

Great party!!! It was a pity to leave the party before midnight, but I was keen to see the traditions in the Plaza.

Getting a taxi at 11.30pm wasn't easy and getting one prepared to go into the chaos in the centre was more difficult. We needed 2!!! But credit to all, we arrived in the plaza with 10 minutes to spare. Walked the last few blocks, along with hundreds of others streaming towards the Plaza.

Made our way to Nortons and squeezed myself out onto the balcony. There were thousands of people in the plaza and those on the road were moving slowly around the plaza. Tradition is to walk 3 times around the Plaza. Not sure if that is for luck or travel. But thousands do it.

Even 10 minutes before midnight fireworks were going off all over - amidst crowd in the plaza as well as all over the surrounding hillsides. At midnight they really went berserk. It was really spectacular.

Some of the fireworks may have been organised by various municipalities, but even more were let off by individuals.  Sound was reverberating all around - it was deafening - but also exhilarating.  All soooo close, and continuous.

We visited both favourite bars on the plaza - just to wish people Feliz Ano Nuevo -

then headed back to the party .... which was still going strong.  Lots of merriment ... as well as customary items to wish people luck and happiness in the new year .... fake money and different sorts of grains.

It was a great night ... nearly missed the first morning of 2012 - didn't get up until just before mid-day!!!
